Population Size and Personal Composition of Swedish Migrants from Estland to Southern Ukraine in 1781–1782

Main Article Content

Abstract

Different versions about Swedish migrants group from Estonia to Ukraine in 1781-1782 population size are reviewed at the article. External and internal source criticism are provided. Extra-source knowledge about conditions and time of documents creation were used for external sources criticism. Internal source criticism included method of contamination personal information from different lists (linking the information about persons). It was comparing information from several sources: “Frisel’s list” (14–15 July 1781), “Sinelnikov’s list” (26 August 1781), Revision list of Gammalsvenskby colony for 1782 year (23 June 1794), and burial list from the first Gammalsvenskby parish book (June 1782 – May 1783). It was also used an information from the log book (1781 – 1782) of migrant’s escort head – Capitan Egor Makaretov and surveyor’s Petro Polozov documents (1781).

By the author’s opinion many versions about Swedish migrant’s population size, we can find in historiography, is connected with insufficiently critical attitude to historical sources. At the same time these sources gives us, an opportunity to establish the number of persons went to Ukraine and finally arrived on the settlement place rather accurately.

The research allows us to make a conclusion that “Sinelnikov’s list” included the most reliable information about the number of Swedish migrants to Ukraine (967 persons). The same document is also the most reliable source about migrant’s personal composition. This fact is confirmed by detection of person matches in this document and parish book. Nevertheless, “Sinelnikov’s list” does not fully reflect the real personal composition of the migrants. It was found that there were several changes of 11 households that must be resettled. The last change was not recorded in the documents.

It can be assumed that the population size of Swedish migrants arrived to the settlement place in May 1782 is also more or less true. Nevertheless, the personal composition of the emigrants from the revision list for 1782 raises doubts.
