Strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank as a Tool for Deterring Russian-Belarusian Threats

Main Article Content

Abstract

The article examines the process of strengthening NATO’s eastern flank as a key instrument of collective security and deterrence against Russian–Belarusian threats in the current geopolitical environment. Since the onset of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022, the issue of enhancing the Alliance’s defense potential along its eastern borders has acquired paramount importance. The study analyzes the evolution of NATO’s strategic approaches to the Central and Eastern European region, including the establishment of multinational battalion groups in Poland and the Baltic States, the deployment of new rapid reaction forces, and the reinforcement of the U.S. and European allies’ military presence. Particular attention is devoted to the role of Belarus as a military-political satellite of Russia, which provides its territory for joint exercises, the deployment of military infrastructure, and the potential stationing of nuclear weapons.

The article highlights NATO’s comprehensive strategy, which encompasses not only military but also political, diplomatic, informational, and economic measures aimed at countering hybrid threats. It explores the modernization of air and missile defense systems, the strengthening of logistical corridors, the integration of member states’ defense capabilities, and the deepening of partnerships with allied countries—first and foremost, with Ukraine.

The impact of the military exercises “Defender Europe”, “Steadfast Defender 24”, and “Zahid” on the regional balance of power is analyzed, as well as the prospects for further reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank in response to potential escalation scenarios from Moscow and Minsk. The author argues that the long-term security of NATO’s eastern flank depends on the Alliance’s ability to effectively combine defensive strategy with proactive deterrence measures.

The article concludes that NATO’s policy in Central and Eastern Europe is aimed at maintaining strategic stability and preventing a new large-scale war on the European continent. At the same time, Ukraine’s experience in resisting Russian aggression demonstrates the necessity of systematically integrating national defense capabilities into the broader security framework of the Alliance.
