Abstract

Joseph-Pierre Еlеonore Petrеquin was a French surgeon who lived in an era when surgery was developing towards a more complex and modern specialization. His brilliant career was divided between surgical pathology and the history of surgery. His two most important works are “Essay on Medical and Surgical Anatomy and Topography” and “The Surgery of Hippocrates”. Realizing the need to combine surgery with anatomy, he was the scientist who introduced the concept of surgical anatomy. His innovations, travels and publications earned him a number of nominations and a place among the most outstanding European surgeons and philosophers of all time. Innovation and innovation were the meaning of his life and became almost the main characteristic of the pioneering surgeon from Lyon. Petrеquin's life and work fell on the middle of the 19th century, a time when rapid scientific progress laid the foundation for modern surgery. In general, surgery flourished in the 19th century, witnessing a complete transformation of surgical methods, finding its way into the modern era with improved anesthesia, antiseptic protocols, and new devices and equipment at the service of medicine. From the very beginning, surgery was defined as a branch of medicine that deals with treatment through bodily intervention. Petrеquin was aware of the cruelty and risks of dissecting a living person’s body and dedicated his entire life to studying and researching methods to minimize the invasiveness of surgical procedures, relieve pain, and reduce the time spent in operating rooms. Artist, philosopher, scientist, hygienist, pathologist, surgeon, and anatomist, Petrеquin was famous and highly acclaimed in his time, receiving a number of scientific titles. Almost all the leading international journals of his era paid tribute to each of his publications, and researchers continue to cite his work two centuries after his death. However, his actions and reactions, his travels, his concern for the health of the population, his surgical skill, his love of the history of surgery, aroused more admiration than sympathy. With his spirit of radical action and perfectionist sophistication, he defined a significant part of the medical culture of modern surgery, and anatomy shone again among surgeons.
