About the “Historical Truth” in Time and Space

Abstract

The article analyses the“crisis of time” in understanding of the historical process, which reveals itself in breaking the link between the past, present and future. The author concentrates his attention on the cult of presentism when the exposition of events of the past and future is subordinated to current conjuncture and on its own creates a comfortable past and determines the same comfortable future. This phenomenon is based on the disappointment with illusions and ideals of the past, when on the personal level there is no any faith  in revolutionary ideas, socialist society and the prospects of European integration, and the desire for wealth, comfort and tempting opportunities prevails in society.

The author emphasizes the necessity of intensification of Ukrainian intellectuals’ activities in search of adequate answers to the challenges of the present time, the need to propose new and convincing ways to explain everything that happens around. Time urgently requires finding historical perspective of way out  of the situation of “everyday survival”, finding the ways to strengthen faith in the triumph of social justice. Otherwise silence of the intellectuals only increases the gap between the historical experience of the society and its ability to understand what is going on now and  what will happen in the future.
