Causes and Stages of Emigration among Ukrainians: a Historical Overview

Main Article Content

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the historical processes of Ukrainian emigration, highlighting the main waves and causes of mass migration abroad. The study covers the period from the late 19th century to the present, addressing the socio-economic, political, and cultural factors influencing migration processes.

The first wave of emigration (1870–1914) marked the beginning of large-scale Ukrainian migration. The interwar period (1918–1939) saw the second wave of emigration. The third wave (1945–1955) was driven by the aftermath of World War II. The fourth wave (1960s–1980s) was predominantly characterized by ethnic and religious motivations. The fifth wave of emigration, which began after 1991, continues to this day.

The article provides a detailed analysis of the socio-demographic composition of emigrants from different periods, their impact on the development of settlement countries, and their ties with Ukraine. Special attention is given to the formation of the Ukrainian diaspora, its institutional development, and its role in preserving national identity. The authors examine the effects of emigration processes on Ukraine’s economic, demographic, and social development.

The study also sheds light on current trends in Ukrainian emigration, including circular migration, transnational families, and new forms of diaspora interaction. The impact of globalization, digital technologies, and social networks on migration processes and the maintenance of connections between the diaspora and Ukraine is analyzed.

Particular attention is paid to Ukraine’s state policy regarding the diaspora and the regulation of migration processes. Legislative initiatives, cooperation programs with the diaspora, and mechanisms for protecting the rights of Ukrainian labor migrants abroad are reviewed. The author evaluates the effectiveness of existing government programs and provides recommendations for their improvement.

An important aspect of the research is the analysis of the economic impact of emigration on Ukraine, particularly the role of remittances from labor migrants in the national economy. Both positive (financial inflows, labor market relief) and negative (demographic challenges, family separations) consequences of mass emigration are examined.

This article contributes to understanding the historical prerequisites and current state of Ukrainian emigration, offering a comprehensive analysis of this multifaceted phenomenon. The study not only systematizes existing knowledge but also outlines prospects for further scholarly investigations in this field.
